Im on youtube almost everyday to find out the lastest products and style techniques that are going on in the "all natural" hair world. Kinky Curly Custard and Knot Today Leave-In Conditioner is a very popular product in the natural hair community. So, I figured if everyone was raving over it that I should try it. When I saw that the Kink Curly Custard was 31.99 for 16oz. and the Knot today was 12.99 for 12oz. I quickly changed my mind. My hair is fine but it's super thick and usually I have to use lots of product in it. I was thinking Im not paying almost 45.00 for those 2 products and pay shipping and handling, cause my hair will drank that straight up!
There is also a smaller hooplah on youtube about the homeade flaxseed gel which some feel is comparable to the Kinky Curly product. I watched several tutorials on how to make it and made some myself. Lets just say I was less than pleased. The consistancy of the homeade flaxseed gel was a cross between snot and eggs whites. I applied it to my hair hesitantly, and to my surprise it really defined my curly and dried quite nicely- with not much shrinkage. Unfortunately, when I woke up in the morning I had a head full of curls coated with white flakes... I even tried to alter the formula by replacing the water with leave-in conditioner, adding melted shea butter to the recipe and using less of it. I applied it again and got the same results. The flax seed gel was a NO GO.
So I continued to do my usual youtube browsing and still kept hearing "Kinky Curly Custard" all the time. So I decided to watch a bunch of tutorials on how to apply it and watch reviews on the product. 97% of the reviews were excellent, and I also found out they sold it locally at Whole Foods. I purchased the two products. When I first opened them up to take a wiff and see what it smelled like, I smelled coconut with a hint of almond. It smells really tropical like a light- refreshing pina colada. I applied them according to the directions and tutorials I watched on youtube. 1) Wash and condition hair 2) Part hair in sections 3) Apply leave-In Conditioner first, then Custard to dripping with hair.... and lets's just say I was more than impressed. My hair was so curly and defined ( and still is)... And the thing is I used very little product. If your hair is not saturated when you apply it to the sections you will have to use more product and I'm sure that's what will cause it to flake. I used very little product, and honestly I probably have enough for 20 more applications. It's worth every penny I paid for it.
